How to remember things

We all need help to remember things at times. You may have a big test coming up or you need to remember names or a phone number. We sometimes find that, even when we think we can remember information, we are stumped to recall it when needed. Knowing the right strategies to use can prevent that kind of forgetting. Using proven strategies will help you remember those things.

Instructions

To help remember things, think about it for a while. Holding information in short term memory longer will assist with the transfer of that information to long term memory.

Make connections between the information you need to remember and prior knowledge. Find relationships between new information and what you already know. For example, if you are introduced to someone new, can you relate them to someone else you knew by the same name? Do they have anything in common? Not only will the connection help you to remember their name but the act of thinking about it will help you remember it. This is thinking on a deeper level and it helps place information into long term memory.

Use multi-sensory approaches to help remember things. Try using visualization by picturing things in your mind, then write the new information down, then say it, etc. as well as reading or hearing about it. This is a multi-sensory approach to learning and it will help you to remember things.

Space out your time when you study new information. This is called spaced trials and is proven in research. In fact it is some of the oldest research in learning theory. You will learn and remember much much more when you space your studying out into shorter segments over a longer period of time, as opposed to a longer period of time all at once. For example, instead of studying for four hours the day before a test, study for 1/2 hour at a time each day for 8 days before the test. You are still putting the same amount of time into it but you will remember much more.

Use memory tools such as mnemonics and acronyms to help remember a series or list of things.

How to have good sleep hygiene

With the help of this, you will be able to turn those sleepless nights into vivid (clear) dreams.

Things You’ll Need:

•    Bed
•    Blanket
•    Pillow

The most important thing is a routine. Your body has an internal clock, so set the standard and be consistent. Go to bed at the same time each night and wake up at the same time each morning.

In order to truly sleep and allow your body and mind to rest, you should make sure your bedroom is quiet and dark. Your bedroom should be a relaxing environment that isn’t neither too cold or hot.

Next tip is to establish bedroom rules. Your bedroom should be your comfort zone where your mentally and physically rest. In other words your bedroom should be for sleeping ONLY… Watching TV, reading books or magazines, using the computer and all other activities should not be allowed in your bedroom.

When you get into your bed, try to ease your mind of the problems and stress of the day. Do not over think or brain storm any particular ideal. If needed play some smooth and soothing music with no lyrics such as jazz or instrumentals.

Avoid activities that are arousing such as heavy studying, exercising, playing games, text messaging, phone conversations, Facebook, or Myspace etc.

Avoid eating large meals before bedtime. This is a good ideal because it will help you avoid gaining weight.

Avoid drinks that have caffeine or large amounts of sugar such as coffee or red bull after lunch.

Tips & Warnings

•    It is recommended that you get at least 8 hours of sleep each night.
•    Sleeping is food for the brain. So eat!!
•    Sufficient sleep will help you think more clearly and be more attentive.
•    Get into bright light as soon as possible in the morning.
•    Lack of sleep can make you look tired and feel depressed.
•    Lack of sleep will contribute to poor school or work performance and negative moods such as anger or sadness.
•    Do not drive when your sleepy.

How to get the highest possible marks on any test

While in college, I discovered I could raise my grades as much as a whole letter by using a “tier” system on my exams.

SKIM: Read all the directions carefully. Double-check for words like “except”, “not”, “least likely.” Circle or mark those words in some way as a reminder. Skim the exam to be sure you know how many pages there are. Find the sections where the answers are the most heavily weighted. (Six T/F points are not worth skipping an essay question that is 15 points.) Sometimes, hints to essay answers are found in the T/F and M/C. If the test is all essays, apply the technique below while being sure to allow time for ALL essays to be attempted.

TRIAGE: divide the work into three categories: “tri” = “three.”)
Run through the entire test and ANSWER all the questions you KNOW now. (For essays, make quick notes in the margins and add to them as the test goes on.) While you are answering your “KNOW” questions, make a quick note on the sheet next to all other questions as you go: one mark for those you “MIGHT KNOW” and a different mark for the group that you have “NO IDEA” about. At the end of the first run through, you will have your triage done, plus you will have answered all the “KNOW” questions.

Answer all the questions marked “MIGHT KNOW.” If a question turns into a “NO IDEA” here, mark it that way and finish all “MIGHT KNOW” questions on the whole exam before returning to it.

Finally, answer remaining ” NO IDEA” questions. If the test does not have a penalty for guesses, be sure to ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS, even those you don’t know. In multiple-choice questions of four or five options, you have a 20% to 25% chance to get it right. In a T/F test, your odds improve to 1:1. That is better than 0% for no answer! Also, on essays you have left unfinished, fill in any information you have on the subject. Again, something is better than nothing!

Make sure you have attempted the entire exam. If you have a separate answer sheet, make sure your answer sheet corresponds to the questions by spot-checking every fourth or fifth question. Clean up any messy or confusing pencil marks. Write your name clearly, turn in, and wait for your happy result!

How to get homework help

Without bending the rules

Homework help is just around the corner. Whether you need geometry homework help, science help, geometry help, or help with some other homework it can be found! And you can find the homework help you need with breaking the rules, risking getting caught cheating, or dinging your conscience. Scan the steps below quickly and you will be on your way to the grade you want with the homework help you need.

Consider This!

DETERMINE HOW MUCH HOMEWORK HELP YOU NEED.

Do you need a one time answer to a formula, a problem, or an assignment? Or do you need some ongoing tutoring in subject you just can’t get? Formulas are public knowledge and fair game if you find them. So, unless you are taking a take home test, you should be able to google the formula you need or go to something like homeworkspot.com to find a specific formula you can’t remember, or fact you just can’t place.

DON’T COPY AND PASTE ANSWERS, ESSAYS, OR ANYTHING ELSE FROM THE INTERNET.

That’s called plagiarism. Teachers are getting smarter and smarter (slowly) about this one and you don’t want to get caught with your hand in the plagiarism jar while your teacher has an ‘F’ sticker in her hand.Especially if you turn in assignments electronincally or via Blackboard you need to know that there are plagiarism detecting programs. Your teacher just hits a button to find out if your cheating.

ASK YOUR PARENTS, OLDER SIBLING, BEST FRIEND, OR FAMILY MEMBER FOR HOMEWORK HELP.

I know this might be painful. But if you are living with your parents, they might have gone through the subject your are going through. Their brains will be dusty and need some jump starting on the problem. But it is a lot easier to figure out a problem the second time than to figure out homework for the first time ever. I know it’s a risk. But ask the old farts and see if you can get some face-to-face free tutoring.

FIND GRAPHS ONLINE

USE THE INTERNET THE RIGHT WAY AND GET QUICK HOMEWORK HELP NOW!

You can use the internet to get ideas, spark creativity, find famous quotes. Use wikipedia not as a source, but as a resource. Look at the cited sources on the article to guide your search in a real library or on google books.

Are you trying to write an essay on Obama? Search around to get a few ideas. Take ‘Obama’s First 100 Day Report Card’ and ‘The President’s New Job’ and write an essay titled ‘Obama’s New Job Report Card.’ That’s your title sparked by their ideas. Not plagiarism. Then write the essay using material you find but putting it in your own words unless you put it in quotes and cite it. It’s a good idea to include a bibliography of your sources even if it isn’t required.

GET ONLINE TUTORING FOR COMPLICATED PROBLEMS OR LONG TERM HELP.

Homework tutoring is an ancient tradition. If you parents aren’t available, don’t get the subject, or just don’t care turn to the online community without fear. Go to an online student tutoring site to get the homework help you need.

ASK YOUR TEACHER FOR EXTRA HELP OR IF HE/SHE KNOWS A TUTOR.

If you are really struggling in a subject and don’t want to use online tutoring, ask a teacher for help. If you don’t to admit to a teacher or professor at your college that you are in need of tutoring go to the guidance counselor or student resources department to ask about tutoring. Ask your classmates if they know of anyone who could tutor you. Sometimes upper class students can easily and quickly guide you through the problems.

If you have to pay for a tutor, it will be worth it in the long run. A good GPA can save you thousands of dollars through scholarships and admission, higher education opportunities, and good job recommendations from teachers and professors. So put down some green for the A if you can spare it.

Tips & Warnings

•    Consider older siblings or extended family members if your parents can’t do the tutoring job.
•    Just don’t cheat. You don’t learn as much and you have to keep cheating. And then you live with the fear of being found out. It’s not worth it. Really. Seriously. Really. It isn’t. Really.

How to get better grades in Maths

Math is one of the most challenging subjects in school for many people. Here are some tips and pointers to help you perform better in math courses, and help you get better grades.

Things You’ll Obviously Need (Crazy but True!)

•    Your brain and time away from the party!
•    Lots of paper and determination to succeed!
•    Pencils and calculator – no need to borrow from others!

Maths is a Practice Subject – No Shortcuts to This Reality

No matter what level math you are studying, the most important thing in succeeding at math is to practice. To some, math concepts come naturally, and to others, they comes more slowly. The best thing you can do in either case is to practice, practice, practice. Practicing can lead to more comfortable performance during tests which can help you get better grades in math. Do a little bit everyday – work consistently!

Understand your homework

Lets say you are having trouble with algebra (or geometry, trigonometry, calculus, or linear algebra) and you have 15 problems assigned to you for homework. The best thing you can do to really help yourself in the long run is to really try to understand and finish all the assigned problems. Don’t just breeze through it just because your homework is graded on completion, rather than accuracy.

If you are still having trouble understanding a concept, or getting answers right, go to the back of your math book and see what answers are given to you. Then, without looking at the answers, try to solve extra problems that weren’t assigned to you and check your answers in the back.

You should always keep up with what you are learning in class, and not fall behind. In other words, even if you finish a homework assignment, make sure you know you understand it as soon as possible. This is because many concepts in mathematics build off of each other, so if you don’t understand something from an earlier date, it will make it harder to learn new concepts. Above all, swallow your pride (if you have any) and go ask your teachers/lecturers for help in understanding a concept or idea! Remember though, people will help you more enthusiastically if they see you are trying!

Practice Past Papers or Problems

As for tests, if you can, try to take practice tests before your actual exam. This will help you get a feel for what exam problems are like for a given subject matter. During the test, take your time and do the problems you know how to do first, then go back and try to finish everything else. Hopefully, following these tips will lead to you getting better grades in math courses!
