How to study – Make exceptional grades

We are all rather intelligent people. But some of us know how to learn and some of us do not. Those who do, make those of us who don’t look weird. It’s time to fix that!

Most people will make the statement that they are a visual learner, or perhaps an auditory learner. What they mean is that they readily remember what they see visually or what they hear (auditory), respectively. But they are only talking about their main way to learn and not fully understanding how we all learn.

when you want something you’ve never had, you have to do something you’ve never done

Have You Thought About This?

Why not accept the fact that we are all multi-sensory learners and then use all of our abilities in the learning process. This is a simple task that requires you to know and understand more about yourself.

When we sit in a classroom and are passive in our learning, we will not do well. When we are active, we will achieve. At least be active when you are studying at home or going over class notes for an exam or test. Here is how you can be active. With these very simple steps, you will become known for your superior learning ability in a nice way.

See and say at the same time. Read out loud so that you are involving both the senses of seeing and hearing at the same time. Visualize a word you are trying to learn to spell. Visualize the paragraph in the textbook you are studying. Write – don’t just underline – but write to get the kinesthetic/tactile/touch sense into play. If you are doing math, write with a finger on sandpaper. It works!

Learn your information paragraph by paragraph in your textbook. Go through a page and then close the book and go back over that page. Do you have it? If you think so, try making out simple questions as if you are the instructor. See how many questions you select will be on the exam or test.

Serious Tips & Warnings

•    Use your notes the same way you use the textbook. Learn them page by page.
•    You may find others wanting to study with you. Be ready to share your learning secrets.

How to study

Here are some tips for more effective studying

Things You’ll Need

•    Material to Study
•    Quiet Area
•    45 minute Interval

Tips and Strategies:

*Find a quiet place with no interruptions so you can focus on the material.

*Review the material right after class when it’s still fresh in your head – preferably the first 24 hours after the material is introduced.

*Review notes, power points and any handouts after skimming the chapter that was covered.

*Take notes , highlight vocabulary words and important notes/ selections in specific colors.

*Make note cards on important concepts or vocabulary words that you especially need to know. This way you can study in short intervals as the note cards should only take a few minutes to go through.

*Take short breaks frequently. Your memory retains the information that you study at the beginning and the end better than what you study in the middle. Its best to study in 45 minute intervals and take a 15 minute break, rather than study for hours on end. You will retain more information this way.

*Try to study least once a day for 45 minutes.
This way, the material will stay in your long-term memory . Cramming the material will only reside in your short-term memory .

*Make sure that you understand the material well, and don’t just memorize it.

*Study groups are good too, but they can sometimes veer off the studying direction if too many people are involved. Be sure to only use a study group if the people within the group are as serious as you are.

*Take the quizzes provided on CD or end of the chapter questions to review the material.

*Record the lectures if possible. This way you can either listen to them on your Ipod or in your car when you don’t have time to review for the day.

How to prevent oversleeping before an exam

Oversleeping before a big test is certainly not going to win any points with your lecturer and isn’t a quick ticket to winning your place on the honour roll. Need to get your academic career back in line? Here’s how to stop oversleeping before an exam.

Probably the Most Important Advice in This Whole Website!

The most common cause for oversleeping is sleep deprivation. If you make a habit of delaying your study sessions until a day or two before the exam, there’s a good chance you’ll be studying late into the night the evening before. Late night study sessions can wreck havoc with your sleep-wake cycle and cause you to oversleep the morning before an exam. Combine that with the coffee you drank to stay awake and your chance of falling back to asleep after your alarm goes off goes up.

To stop oversleeping, keep a calendar listing dates of important exams and schedule focused study time at least a week before. Spending an hour or two each day covering the exam material will  mean you have less need to stay up half the night on the evening before the exam. You’ll also experience less panic and stress when you don’t have to pull an all night study marathon.

The next step is to avoid caffeine within twenty-four hours of an important test or exam. Some of the caffeine that is drunk the day before an exam will still be in your system when you’re trying to sleep the night before. Not only can this keep you from your much needed shut eye, it also may increase your risk of oversleeping the next morning.

It may seem obvious by if you have a tendency to oversleep, set multiple alarms the night before the test and place them in several part of the room so you have to get up to turn them off. Once you’re out of bed, the chances of falling back to sleep are much lower.

Another way to stop oversleeping is to invest in a coffee maker with an automatic timer. When the time goes off, the coffee will automatically start percolating and you’ll awaken to the pleasing scent of freshly prepared coffee. Who can resist getting up to enjoy a hot cup before an exam? Caffeine on the morning of a test may work in your favor by increasing your level of alertness.

You can even use online tools to help stop oversleeping. Head over to snoozester.com and sign up for their wake up call service. You set the times and they’ll call you to remind you to get up. They’ll even call multiple times until you pick up the phone and acknowledge that you’re awake.

How to resist the urge to cheat on a test

With the advance of technology and the adaptation of traditional modes of learning and testing, the urge to cheat on tests is a serious problem for many individuals in many different institutions. Resisting the urge to cheat means using your self-determination and willpower to triumph over the sometimes formidable temptation.

How

Consider the consequences. Lots of cheaters take their liberties because they aren’t thinking about the possible ramifications of their actions. If caught, you can get an automatic failing grade which is probably worse than if you had just tried hard to take the test honestly. You can also get expelled from school, endure consequences at home and reduce your chances of getting into a good college.

Cheating Student

Look at the situation from a “big picture” perspective. Try to see the advantages of honesty beyond just their practical applications, and think about how your personal integrity plays a large role in your life. Also, a lot of concepts that you learn in class build upon each other. If you don’t learn it the first time, you will struggle throughout the rest of the course.

Take pride in honest work. Study hard and work hard. Think about how you will view your challenges years later when you look back on them. Try to remember the value of how it feels to do honest work.

Take pride in honest work. Study hard and work hard. Think about how you will view your challenges years later when you look back on them. Try to remember the value of how it feels to do honest work.

Don’t tempt yourself by bringing cheating tools along to a test. If you think you’ll be enticed to sneak a peek at your iPod in the middle of that history exam, leave it at home. The same goes for writing on your hand. Having resources with you increases your temptation to cheat.

Use self-discipline. This psychological aspect is a lot like a muscle; using it routinely makes it stronger. Learn to moderate your own behavior using the tips above as well as a general belief in your own will-power. Every time you succeed over temptations makes you better able to handle bad urges in the future.

How to pass any test

Are you having trouble passing tests?

Do you want to become a better test taker?

Here are some helpful tips:

The first you need to do is stop cramming. I hear people all the time claiming they are good at cramming. Truth is if you want to do your best on a test you need adequate time to study. Although its true you never ask a doctor what grades he made on his entrance exam. You probably can pick out who crammed and who studied. We don’t want the test material to be in our short term memory, we want the material in our long term memory.

Try to study around the same time every day to create a pattern. Go somewhere where you are free from distraction. If you have to lock the door do it the point is you need peace and quiet.

Find out what type of learner you are. Are you a auditory learner. If so you need to try to find audio tapes or Cd’s that cover the material you are learning. Or you need to record yourself reading and play it at night before going to bed. You can even play your study material in the car on your way to work.

If you are a visual learner then you need to see the material. You will study better reading the material. or looking at pictures or charts with the material on it. Audio will not work for you, but flash cards will work great for you.

Are you a kinesthetic learner then you need to physically have some type of hands on with the material. You may need to physically be able to look at the material and get out and go through the steps with your study material.

How to not have to study right before tests

Ever want to be successful in school without having to cram right before tests? Wonder how the kid who seems like he never studies before a test does so well? The class might actually just be a complete joke, or he is applying other strategies that help him not have to cram. I will teach you how.

Instructions

Pay attention in class, most teachers take information straight from their lectures and apply them to their tests. Say 50% of the information on tests is from lecture, if you just pay attention you are guaranteed at least a 50%.

Read your notes right after class. When the information is fresh in your mind, review it so it sticks in your mind. This will help eliminate the need to really try and memorize everything at once before the test.

The other source of information teachers use for tests is your textbook. Before or after class read your textbook. This is when lecture is fresh in your mind and you can fill in the holes with the textbook information, and visa versa if you read before class.

STOP CRAMMING! A typical human can only be productive at an intense task like studying for around 30-45 minutes before there is an exponential decline in the productivity in the mind.
